7 Common Types of Heavy Equipment Rentals

Sep 22, 2023

When renting heavy equipment, you’re working with an industry bigger than you might expect. According to IBISWorld, this industry in the U.S. has grown by 1.2% every year between 2017 and 2022. That’s because renting is cheaper than buying and there are many equipment options available to you. Keep reading to learn more about the different types of equipment you can rent.

1. Excavators

Excavators help with digging, demolition, material handling, dredging, landscaping, and mining. They’re a prevalent equipment type and typically come in sizes from between 2,000 to 20,000 pounds. Choose wisely when picking this type of tool.

2. Bulldozers

Bulldozers or crawlers have a continuous track and a blade that makes them useful for forestry, road building, clearing land, mining, and working in a forest. They include multiple blade types that may work well for you. Take the time to choose which model you prefer.

3. Motor Graders

A motor grader is a type of heavy equipment with a long blade that can grade material easily. They’re useful for dirt roads, preparing roads for pavement, or grading soil. They also have a rear attachment that can help with compacting or ripping certain materials.

4. Telehandlers

A telehandler (a boom lift or reach forklift) has a boom that extends up and down. It works similarly to other forklifts but has more diversity in usage. They’re useful for moving materials to high places or lifting heavy materials to high spots.

5. Dump Trucks

Dump trucks move a large amount of materials from one area to another using an open bed. One end has a gate that, when opened, lets the truck bed lift to dump out materials. They’re most often used for hauling things like sand, gravel, soil, and other types of heavy, loose materials.

6. Compactors

A compactor lets you smash together rocks and gravel to compact ground before you lay concrete foundation slabs or roads. They often use a plate compactor and jumping jack to produce a level grade. Some are suitable for narrow trenches.

7. Loader

Loaders let you pick up many materials, such as snow, minerals, and debris, and move them to another area. They have a front-mounted bucket that helps lift this material properly. You may also know them as a payloader or a wheel loader.
